Expeditions and Trips

At Harrow International School Appi Japan, expeditions and trips are central to our holistic education. Our remote mountain setting provides unparalleled opportunities for students to engage with nature, develop resilience, and learn skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

To take full advantage of our full-boarding offering, students also get to go on expeditions and trips outside of Appi Kogen during term time, allowing them the opportunity to explore everything Japan has to offer

Students take part in a range of experiences, such as:

The Short Ex

House Short Ex: During the Golden Season, all students participate in a short expedition alongside their House Beaks. This provides an important bonding experience, helping newly formed Houses establishidentity and teamwork while developing outdoor skills in the local mountains and surroundings.

Year Group Short Ex: Year Group Short Ex allows students to spend time with peers in their academic year group. Activities are age-appropriate and designed to foster outdoor learning, teamwork, and personal growth.

Optional Expedition

For the most adventurous students, optional expeditions offer extra challenge and exploration, such as overnight hikes to the summit of Mt. Hachimantai, snowshoeing in Hachimantai and caving in Akkaido. These experiences encourage independence, resilience, and confidence in outdoor settings.

Year group trips

All students participate in a Year Group Trip as part of Enrichment Week, a Harrow tradition that immerses the whole school in experiential learning.
